Since the Mustang made its debut at the New York World’s Fair in 1964, Ford has continued to combine the spirit of the original vehicle with features that delight current customers.

Mustang has remained the sales leader in its segment for the past 13 years. More than 6.9 million vehicles have been sold since this American legend first rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Mich.

The 2000 Mustang is offered in both coupe and convertible body styles, and drivers can enjoy the vehicle in three new colors: Performance Red, first seen on the 1999 35th anniversary model, as well as Tropic Green and Sunburst Gold.

New for 2000 is a child safety-seat anchoring system as a standard item on both the coupe and convertible. The system, which meets new Federal requirements, features two permanent child safety-seat tether anchors in the back seat.

Also available for 2000 are new, 16-inch wheels and tires offered as an option on the V-6 appearance package. In addition to giving the V-6 a sportier look, the new wheels and tires offer improved handling. The 2000 Mustang V-6 also features a tri-color-bar emblem on the sides of the front fenders, while Mustang GT features a "GT" emblem.

Mustang offers an optional all-speed traction control system designed to help limit wheel spin and stabilize steering on slippery surfaces. The system uses ABS sensors to detect excess drive-wheel spin. It helps reduce wheel slippage by retarding ignition timing, controlling fuel flow reduction and cylinder cutoff in conjunction with individual brake application. The driver can de-activate the system with a console-mounted on/off switch.

The exterior design harkens back to the concept of the original pony car, with styling cues like the classic long hood with a short rear deck and the vehicle’s signature tri-bar taillamps. Mustang enthusiasts appreciate updated design of the rear spoiler, honeycomb grille textures, and side character lines.

"Throughout its history, Mustang’s distinct design and strong performance have made driving it fun and exciting," says Jim O’Connor, president of Ford Division and vice president of Ford Motor Company. "With contemporary styling that builds on the original concept and continued performance improvements, it’s no wonder the vehicle remains a leader in its segment."

Mustang boasted sales of 418,812 its first year on the market, and the millionth vehicle was produced in Dearborn, Michigan in 1966. Since then, the all-American sports car has become one of the legendary automotive brands.
